Currently, most business-related communication is in English, most communication between governments is in English and English is by a vast majority the most spoken language on the internet which we ironically can presently relate to. I am not saying that I believe that English should be our lingua franca, but it is an excellent example of how it could work.
 
Sorry @OxfordianEnvisionary, but I believe that English is too intricate and has too much history attached for it to be our lingua franca. For a universal means of communication to be successful it essentially needs to have a motivation for all, it should be culture neutral and it has to have a clear simple system of rules. Amusingly enough, this is an exact juxtaposition of what the English language is.
