General Discussion / Re: New World?

Fellow language enthusiasts! We really are fighting tooth and nail for our individual causes! Each one of us is passionate about what we believe in and that is wonderful! Our petty discussion here just proves how important our beliefs, identity and diversity are to us. We have because of this fantastic online tool connected, shared ideas and learnt something from each other. Our differing opinions have clashed and this has come to happen because of languages. Languages make our lives unique, but fundamentally we connect over these differences. I love languages; I believe that they express something about people and their culture that no other human trait can. Communication is what has enabled us to become who and what we are.

@esperantorulz @OxfordianEnvisionary I can see from our intellectually thought-provoking discussion that we each have our own differing opinions. Your arguments have opened my mind to how adverse our opinions can be. I am unsure if this correlates to culture, opportunities or ethnicities, but the one thing that I am sure of is how entertaining this discussion and your responses to my statement have been. I think that we should all just agree to disagree! We are entitled to differing opinions and I believe that we should leave it at that.

@esperantorulz You must be one of those individuals that I was writing about in my previous post…

I believe that what you are trying to say is that you believe that our world needs simplified. You believe that diversity is confusing and only leads to more trouble than it is worth. That is where you are wrong! Diversity is what makes us unique, because of it, we have various cultures, religions and identities that make us who we are. A lack of these things would be, to put it nicely, BORING!

As David Crystal has previously stated: “Language has no independent existence apart from the people who use it” and I fully agree with him. Culture goes hand in hand with languages which causes me to ask: can one culture and one language support all of humanity?

In our current time in age, we are all becoming more and more like robots. We all watch the same programs, listen to the same music and dress in the same clothes, but now certain individuals have the audacity to proclaim that we should all speak the same global language, a lingua franca as they are calling it.

When I was young, people were striving to be different! We tried to stick out from the masses as much as possible. My age must be catching up with me, I suspect that my ideas on our uniqueness must be getting old.
